Project : File Creator

A simple yet semi-useful program. You can enter 4 attributes of students – first name, last name, student ID and course and save all the information into a text file. By default, I have set the target destination as Desktop, but you can create your own folder in the Desktop and save all the files in it.

As usual, project is designed entirely in Java. I have used Matisse for programming the user interface.

Also, I’ve pimped it up by adding a copyright at the bottom and the JFrame title!

Project : A Simple Student Database Management System

Lately, I have been experimenting with Java Swing API, the Java library for designing user interfaces and a few concepts of Database Management Systems.

My last project involved use of NetBeans’ native, inbuilt UI builder Matisse. Although it’s easy to use and much more graphically accurate than actually coding the interface, it does not provide any flexibility in terms of functionality. But once you master the art of building user interfaces with your bare hands, you don’t need much else.

The most important feature of this software that I have developed if of course, the database. I have chosen MySql as my database system for its sheer ease of use and lightweight nature. Once my database has been created, I can very easily add, delete and show entries, in the database. These tasks can be performed on the command line as well, but it’s always nice to have a proper interface for the end users to deal with.

The program has been coded entirely in Java and its connectivity to my database has been achieved through a JAR library specially designed for this purpose – Connector-J.

To convert my JAR application into an exe file, I have used a program called Jar2Exe Wizard 1.8. It lets me add all JAR libraries that my program would require and allows me to have a fancy splash image to display before my software starts. Small programs such as this one don’t require a lot of time to get up and running, so I added a 1.8 second delay by putting my main thread to sleep just so my splash image would show for that period of time!

My Project : Voice Chat System using Java

As a partial requirement for my Master’s degree in Informatics, we were required to undertake a project at IIC which lasted for almost two months. We (my team members and I) decided to develop a program that would transmit voice over the internet. And, since Java was already part of our curriculum for the second semester, we decided to develop it in Java itself. Sounds simple!

Three major features of Java were used in designing the software :-

1. Java Sound API
2. Java Networking
3. Java Swing API (for UI)

Below are the download links for both the Java source files and the executable JAR files.

Download Executable JAR Files (138)

Installing WordPress on a localhost using Xampp

As the title would suggest, the following video shows you how to effectively install a WordPress blog on a localhost using the Xampp server. This could be important to you for two reasons :

1. You would like to try out WordPress before actually installing it on your web host.
2. Someone puts a gun to your head and tells you to install it.

In either case, I think this would help!

DD v/s CSK : What went wrong?

May25

What went wrong? Well, for starters, CSK beat DD in the second Qualifier! It’s strange how CSK has been riding it’s luck to claw their way into the qualifying stage, and now that they’re there, they’ve been playing some of their best cricket. Players who’ve struggled throughout the tournament, have suddenly been infused with a surge of form! The way Murali Vijay played today reminded me of his previous hundred(duh!). What I mean is he threw caution to the wind right at the start, and once he got going, he was unstoppable(well almost, since he got run out off the last delivery!).

Luck and good batting aside, DD were hugely responsible for their 86-run mauling. This was their first match where they got bundled out before their allotted 20 overs and it seemed fitting that they crashed out of the IPL in this match itself. The Daredevils’ team has been like the kid who studied diligently throughout school, getting all the good grades and, for the most part has been the teacher’s pet, and yet on the day of the final exam, gets cold feet and forgets everything that he has learned! I know it’s a cliched analogy, but it stands in good stead here.

Clearly, DD lost it big time tonight! And it started right at the beginning of the match when Sehwag elected to field first in a crucial game. DD does have a good record chasing, but in a pressure situation, runs on the board upfront is a major advantage. That being said, poor team selection was probably the deciding factor for the Daredevils. Why you would leave out your strike bowler(Morne Morkel) who’s sporting a purple cap, just eludes me! Commentators’ opinions suggest that they panicked becuase of the unavailability of Irfan Pathan, and deemed Andre Russell a worthy replacement. They also decided to play newbie Sunny Gupta tonight which I felt was pretty weird, seeing that they had Nadeem in their arsenal. Strike three was some shoddy fielding and lackluster bowling. Drop catches, misfield and overthrow seemed to be the the motto for the day for the DDs. When you have players like David Warner dropping catches, you know you’re in trouble!

Well what’s done is done. CSK have somehow managed to sneak in through the back door and make it to their third consecutive IPL Final. Seeing as Chennai is on the rise, they are certainly the favourites to lift the cup yet again.

IPL-5 : Qualifier 1 DD v/s KKR Preview

May22
2012
5 Comments Written by TechMaman

So we’re all set for the first of the qualifiers between the Delhi Daredevils and the Kolkata Knight Riders in Pune. This IPL has been the tightest one yet, with the top four confirming their spots only after the penultimate league stage game. It’s definitely going to be a great contest between the two heavyweights. Both have performed consistently throughout the season with either team winning a game against each other in the league round. This is also a battle between two good friends in Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag. That being said, both of them would be eager to confirm their spot in the finals, which would be a debut for either team.

Key Players :

Virender Sehwag

The Delhi Dasher has been in destructive form in this IPL. Although his form has dipped a little in the fag end of the tournament, he would be hoping to make a comeback after his two match rest.

With a dreadful run with the bat for the better part of the tournament, the Delhi team owners would have been kicking themselves for this buy. But the Kiwi skipper struck form out of nowhere, to prove his worth against RCB where he almost pulled off a miraculous win over them. Seems he’s hit his purple patch just at the right time!

Gautam Gambhir

The KKR skipper has been in sparkling form throughout the tournament. He has led the team from the front and has definitely been one of the main reasons for KKR’s success. Besides his batting, he has shown good leadership skills on the field as well. His team will certainly be banking on him to get them through to the finals.

Sunil Narine

He is certainly one of the finds of this year’s IPL. If he’s been the strike bowler for a team that has Brett Lee in it, he must be special! The wearing Indian pitches have been conducive for spin bowling, and Narine’s unorthodox grip combined with his high arm action have made him an awkward customer to bat against. Wickets apart, he’s been miserly in the runs department as well with a fantastic economy rate.

Samsung Galaxy S3 : Features to watch out for

May07

S Voice

Voice recognition software has been available in some form or another for the past decade, but it was Apple’s Siri, a personal voice assistant that brought a more ‘natural’ form of voice recognition to smartphones. Siri was a major marketing factor for the iPhone 4S and Samsung has decided to come up with a personal voice assistant of their own. Dubbed S-Voice, this feature of the S3 allows you to control your smartphone only by using your voice. Commands can be personalized, but possible uses for S-Voice include unlocking the smartphone, launching apps, taking pictures with the 8MP camera, music control (such as stop, play, pause and skip), snoozing the alarm, turning on the Wi-Fi /Bluetooth and more. S-Voice is available in the following languages: British, USA English, Italian, German, French, Spanish and Korean.

Social Tag

Possibly one of the most interesting intelligent functions of the Galaxy S3 is the social tagging feature. According to Samsung, the Galaxy S3 is capable of identifying and properly tagging the people in your photos as long as you have them added as contacts (with an attached picture). If this face recognition software works as Samsung claims it does, it is one of the most interesting smartphone capabilities ever. The Social Share ability takes matters one step further, by allowing you to instantly share the pictures with the contacts the S3 has recognized in the photo.

Direct Call

Direct Call allows you to make a call simply by lifting the phone to your ear while writing a message to someone, or while specific contact details are brought up to the display. Just lift, and speak. Personally, I can think of many scenarios where this could go wrong and I’m not actually sure that the couple of extra touches that you save are really all that important, but it is a nice feature to have.

Smart Stay

This is definitely the most useful of all the smart functions available on the Galaxy S3. Smart Stay detects if the user is looking at the display and keeps the display from timing out until the user looks away. A very useful feature for those of us that regularly read text on our smartphones.

Smart Alerts

If you’ve been away from your smartphone for a while, it’s possible that you have missed a few calls and messages. Granted, Android smartphones always notified you of the stuff you missed, but the Galaxy S3 takes one step further and vibrates to inform you of the action that happened while you were away.

Samsung Galaxy S3

It’s great news for all you Samsung and Android fans out there! Samsung has unveiled the new Galaxy S3, which is sure to give some stiff competition to the current heavyweights such as the HTC One X and the Sony Xperia S.

At 133g and dimensions measuring 136.6 x 70.6 x 8.6mm, the phone is definitely on the bulkier side. On the bright side though, it sports a 4.8 inch Super AMOLED display and a very good, wide viewing angle. They have also increased the pixel density substantially from ~218 ppi of the predecessor to ~306 ppi with a resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels. The HTC One X fares slightly better in this area with ~312 ppi.

The camera has not improved substantially with 8 megapixels(3264 x 2448 pixels) instead of the expected 12 megapixels but still shoots decent pictures and videos at 1080p.  The front facing camera comes with 1.9 megapixels, which is surprisingly, less that that of Galaxy S2 at 2 megapixels. You can also capture stills and shoot video at 720p simultaneously.

In the performance department, S3 packs a punch! With an Android OS v4.0.4 this phone carries a  1.4GHz Cortex A9 processor with the new quad core Exynos 4212 Quad chipset. It comes with a Mali 400MP graphics processor and 1 GB of RAM. Internal flash memory is available in 16, 32 and 64 GB versions and it incorporates a micro SD card slot for further expansions, something that’s missing from the HTC One X.

It’s slated for release on the 29th of May this year. In India, it’s rumoured to be out in June. It’s expected price in India is about Rs.38000.
